Definition#
The Declarable Substance List (DSL) is the maintained reference list at the core of IEC 62474, formally titled "declarable substance groups and declarable substances". It is the authoritative set of substances that must be declared in the electrotechnical industry, and each entry records the regulatory or assessment reason it is listed.
Declare against the DSL instead of a private list. It is maintained centrally by IEC/TC 111 and updated as the law changes, giving the whole supply chain one harmonized source of truth. It is not the same as REACH's Candidate List.
How it works#
- It is maintained centrally by the IEC 62474 Validation Team (VT 62474) and updated regularly as regulations evolve.
- Substances are identified by CAS number and grouped where they share a regulatory basis.
- Suppliers declare against the DSL, which gives the whole chain one harmonized source of truth instead of many private lists.
Why it matters#
Because the DSL updates as the law changes, declaring against it keeps reporting current without everyone maintaining their own substance list. It is the data companion to the IEC 62474 exchange format and is governed by IEC/TC 111.
